Statutory (or public) holidays are, broadly speaking, designated days off mandated by federal and/or provincial laws. These holidays ensure that employees in a particular province are entitled to a paid day off from work. Employers are required to adhere to the minimum employment standards of the jurisdiction under which they are regulated.
At Procom, we are a provincially-regulated company, meaning we follow the employment legislation of the province where you work. For example, if you primarily work in Alberta, we apply the Employment Standards Code of Alberta to determine your entitlements as a Procom employee.
While some of these holidays are observed nationwide, others are specific to certain provinces.
There may also be situations where the client you are working at observes a holiday that is not a statutory holiday in the province where you are working (ie. the Client may observe Remembrance Day as a holiday, however in Ontario, this is not a statutory holiday and therefore a Procom employee would not be paid statutory holiday pay for that day).
If you would like to know details about eligibility, how it's calculated and how to handle your timesheets, please refer to the article, "Understanding Statutory Holiday Pay: Eligibility, Calculation, and Timesheet Reporting".
