Generally, overtime pay is calculated by multiplying your hourly rate by 1.5 for any hours worked in excess of a set number of hours for the week, or in some provinces, for the day.
For instance, in Ontario, you will be paid overtime for any hours worked in excess of 44 hours in a week. Alberta, on the other hand, has the same standard for the weekly threshold but also has a daily threshold of 8 hours.
Please see the table below for details on your province's overtime rates that you may be entitled to and the applicable overtime threshold.
The overtime threshold may be reduced in certain provinces if there is a statutory holiday in the week that overtime hours are incurred. For example, in Saskatchewan, the normal threshold is 40 hours, but would be reduced to 32 hours in a week with a statutory holiday.
Depending on the province, statutory holiday pay may or may not be included in overtime calculations when the employee works on the holiday. For example, in Ontario, employees are only entitled to overtime pay on public holidays if they are not already working at a premium rate.
Example: Standard Overtime Pay Calculation (Ontario)
You work in Ontario. Your regular pay is $25.00 per hour. Your overtime rate (1½ X regular hourly pay) is $37.50 per hour. This week, you worked the following hours:
| Sunday | Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday | Saturday | TOTAL |
| 0 | 9 | 9 | 9 | 10 | 9 | 0 | 46 hours |
Any hours worked over 44 in a week are overtime hours. You worked two hours of overtime (46 − 44 = 2).
Your pay for the week is calculated as follows:
Regular pay: 44 hours X $25.00 = $1,100.00
Overtime pay: 2 hours X $37.50 = $75.00
TOTAL PAY: $1,100.00 + $75.00 = $1,175.00
Result: You're entitled to a total gross pay of $1,175.00 for this workweek.
Timesheets
If you are submitting timesheets through FlexBackOffice or the Contractor Portal, you do not need to enter anything differently on your timesheets for weeks that you work overtime. Simply enter the number of hours you have worked, and we will calculate your overtime pay for you. However, if you are submitting timesheets through a different system, such as Fieldglass, Beeline, or FlexTrack, you may be required to enter overtime hours separately from your regular hours.
Before working overtime, you should confirm with your manager that they would like you to work these additional hours. Once the payment has been processed, overtime pay will appear as an additional line item on your pay stub.
Please note: Incorporated contractors and sole proprietors are not eligible for overtime pay, as it applies to employees only. Employees in some professions are not eligible for overtime, depending on the province and role (as per provincial employment standards). For more details on eligibility, please see the article 'Links to Employment Standards Websites - Provincial/Federal'.
